Inspektor Gadget ist ein Cyborg mit verschiedenen in seinen Körper und seine Kleidung eingebauten Geräten, sogenannten Gadgets. Sein Hauptgegner ist der Führer der Organisation MAD, der geheimnisvolle und stets von seiner Katze begleitete Dr. Kralle. Dabei ist es meistens seine clevere Nichte Sophie, die dem tollpatschigen Inspektor mit Hilfe ihres Computer-Buchs immer wieder aus der Patsche hilft und dafür sorgt, dass ihr Onkel am Ende wieder den Sieg über den bösen Dr. Kralle davonträgt. Der Hauptleidtragende von Inspektor Gadgets Ungeschicklichkeiten bleibt dabei Sophies Hund Fino, der dem roboterähnlichen Ermittler bei seinen Fällen hinterherspioniert, um ihm zusammen mit Sophie immer wieder aus der Klemme zu helfen.
